We got comp tickets to see the
Oregon Children's Theatre Production of Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse because of the workshop I did for them. Clara loves the
Kevin Henkes mouse books, and was SO EXCITED to go. We had a week of pre-show questions. "Is Mr. Slinger going to take Lilly's purse away? Will she get it back with things in it? Is Owen going to be in the play? Are you sure he won't? Should we wait and see? What about the girl who kisses the spider?" The character Lilly loves to dress up and so the kids were encouraged to do likewise--hence the above ensemble. She wore this get-up all day even though the play wasn't until 2 pm, and could hardly contain herself in the car. Imagine her delight to see this runway filled with frilly little girls lined up for their turn at a pre-show fashion show.
"I want to do that!" she exclaimed. Fortunately there was a gigantic line and so we escaped (though she did run away from us after the play was over, calling over her shoulder "I'm going to see something!" and tried to get in line again afterward. Sneaky). The play turned out to be a bit much for her, I think. There were a few scary moments that weren't in the books and we underestimated how dreadfully concerned she'd be about the baby Julius character, played by a baby puppet. She cried every time the scene changed and we couldn't see him, and was quite upset if his mama would leave the room without him or if no one picked him up when he cried. Then if a baby in the theatre audience cried, she would fret about that baby, as well. "That baby is crying. Why is he crying? He doesn't like the play. Maybe he's hungry. Is his mama taking him to the potty? Is someone going to hold him?" I hope we can stand all the advice if we get lucky enough to bring her baby sister home in April! And of course we hope she warms to her a little more quickly than Lilly does to Julius. :)
