Although blessed with a toddler who was an early and fairly clear communicator, we still have to do our share of Decoding Toddler over here. Today's cipher starts with Clara's newest activity of choice, drawing faces. She's really into drawing faces. Exhibit A, a birthday card she made last week for a friend's 2nd birthday:
The Mamas were pretty pleased with this development and you can imagine our dismay when every sheet of lovely faces ended up with swirly scribbles on top of them. See Exhibit B:
What explanation could the child possibly have for defacing her beautiful characters? Well, when asked what the swirls were, she proudly announced, "They're stuck!" Hmmm. Not so helpful. But wait a minute! Detective Mama knows what that means!!!! To explain I have to disclose the embarrassing fact that although the child has an elementary teacher and children's librarian for a Mama and the awesome library of quality children's books to match, some of her favorite titles are out of our bin of old Golden Books that were mine as a child (or my brothers', giving them a publication range of anywhere from 1958-1976 or so). Her favorite choices? The Word Book, BARBIE (where Barbie's a stewardess to Captain Ken of all things), and the Sesame Street Together Book (even though she's never seen Sesame Street). In the Sesame Street Together Book, there is one page where, despite my attempts to explain what the illustration is supposed to represent, Clara always stops me to say, "He's stuck." And here we have our explanation, with Exhibit C:
