The Casting Pond

Westmoreland Park has a giant casting pond that has been vacant for five years. We had never seen it with water and had discussed its potential as a great skate park. Evidently it was a WPA project, hand dug, for casting practice and the sailing of little boats. They began refilling it this month--2.8 million gallons of water by Oct. 31st at 100,000 gallons a day. Some of the playgroup babies were there for the first drops of water entering the pond; this photo was taken by the Oregonian photographer covering the event. From left to right: Michelle (with Lucas in center), Cherl and Thomas, Gaylen with Ella and Claire, Amy with Calvin, Wendy with Josefina, Kirstin and Clara, Raquel with Kaia and Melinda with Sierra.
